We Are The People: An Evening With Indigenous Leaders

We humbly invite you to join us for a night of cultural exchange and alliance building with spiritual leaders Yawa Bane and Yube, representing the Huni Kuin tribe of the Brazilian Amazon, and Modesto Rivera of the Wixarika people of Mexico. As we progress into this new age of psychedelic renaissance we must not forget about indigenous wisdom keepers and healers. Our conversation intends to bring each side closer to one another to create a foundation of trust and support that spans borders and unites cultures.

This will be an evening of traditional storytelling from each tribe in addition to a discussion on current tribal affairs in both Brazil and Mexico. There will be a marketplace to directly support indigenous artisans as well as music to bring in the spirit of the Huni Kuin and Wixarika peoples.

Modesto Rivera is a spiritual leader of the Wixarika (aka Huichol) community in the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains. He is the son of Eustolio and Mama Chaly and comes from a long unbroken lineage of Marakames (medicine men). He is a talented musician and traditional storyteller and wrote and illustrated a book, When Animals Were People.

Leopardo Yawa Bane is the son of Chief Sia Huni Kuin. Ever since he was a child, he and his brothers have been on a path forge new alliances to help the Huni Kuin while bringing their tradition to the world at large. He left the forest to study Social Science at the Political University of Sao Paulo and has since returned to help guide his people in our modern times.

Jose Yube Huni Kuin is an agro-forestry specialist and indigenous filmmaker. José has participated in indigenous film festivals in the United States, Germany, Mexico and Bolivia and his films have won many awards. He was Secretary of AMAAIAC (Association Movement of Indigenous Agroforestry Agentsof Acre) from 2002 to 2008 and Advisor for Indigenous Affairs with the Government of the State of Acre from 2011 until 2019.
